TODAY’S LESSON: Do what you can… NO MORE… NO LESS… (living Acts 17:22-25)

HIGH FIVE! (DON’T OVERTHINK… keep building)

Acts 17:22-25 records Paul’s speech at the Areopagus in Athens, where he addresses a culture filled with philosophy, idols, and religious ideas. These verses reveal key truths about God’s nature and humanity’s relationship to Him.

Passage Summary

Paul says:

  1. The Athenians are very religious (v.22).
  2. They worship an “unknown god” without knowing who He truly is (v.23).
  3. The true God created the world and everything in it (v.24).
  4. God is Lord of heaven and earth and cannot be confined to temples made by human hands (v.24).
  5. God does not depend on human service because He is the source of all life, breath, and everything else (v.25).

4 Core Takeaways

1. God Wants to Be Known

Paul uses the Athenians’ altar “To an Unknown God” as a bridge to introduce them to the true God.

Significance: People may have spiritual longings, questions, or religious practices, but God desires that they know Him personally rather than remain in ignorance.

2. God Is the Creator

Paul begins with creation instead of the Law because his audience was largely Gentile.

Significance: Everything belongs to God because He made it. This establishes His authority over every nation, culture, and person.

3. God Cannot Be Contained by Human Religion

The Athenians were surrounded by impressive temples and statues. Paul declares that the Creator does not live in buildings made by human hands.

Significance: God is not limited to religious structures, traditions, or man-made images. He is far greater than anything humans can build.

4. God Is Self-Sufficient

Unlike pagan gods who were believed to need sacrifices to sustain them, the God of the Bible needs nothing from humanity.

Significance: We do not serve God because He lacks something. We serve Him because He is worthy, and because He is the giver of life to us.

Application for Today

Paul demonstrates a powerful model for witnessing:

  • Observe people’s beliefs before speaking.
  • Find common ground.
  • Speak respectfully and truthfully.
  • Point people from religion to a relationship with God.
  • Emphasize God’s greatness, not merely human effort.

Just as Paul met the Athenians where they were, believers today can engage coworkers, neighbors, Toastmasters members, Rotary friends, and others by starting with what they understand and then pointing them toward the truth of God.

Acts 17:22-23Humanity’s search for God and the altar to the “unknown god.”
Acts 17:24God is Creator and Lord who cannot be contained in temples.

Key Verse:
“The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands” (Acts 17:24).

This passage reminds us that Christianity is not about humans reaching up to sustain God, but about the Creator revealing Himself and giving life to those who seek Him.

SHORT, SIMPLE AND SWEET… Keep building Kevin… Keep building… YES! I talk to myself… I encourage myself when I truly do not understand the workings of the world… I don’t think that I was created to worry about the world… I WAS CREATED TO WIN WITH INTEGRITY… (we got church council tonight)

Kevin… that’s actually a pretty healthy perspective.

“Keep building, Kevin. Keep building.”

You weren’t created to carry the weight of the whole world. God didn’t assign you responsibility for everything He controls.

Acts 17 reminds us:

God gives life, breath, and everything else.

You’re not the provider of the universe. You’re not the manager of tomorrow. You’re not the fixer of every problem.

You’re responsible for faithfulness. God is responsible for outcomes.

So for church council tonight:

  • Show up.
  • Listen.
  • Speak with wisdom.
  • Vote with integrity.
  • Trust God with the results.

That’s winning.

Personal battle cry for tonight:

“I don’t have to understand all the workings of the world. I simply need to walk faithfully in the part God has given me. I was created to win with integrity.”

Keep building, Kevin. One faithful decision at a time. God has the blueprints. 🛠️✝️🙏

AMEN
