TODAY’S LESSON: Matthew 22:15-21

The Significance of “Render to Caesar”

Passage Summary:
The Pharisees and Herodians attempted to trap Jesus with a politically charged question: “Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” If Jesus said “yes,” many Jews would reject Him. If He said “no,” He could be accused of rebellion against Rome. Jesus asked for a denarius, pointed to Caesar’s image on it, and answered:

“Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s.” (Matthew 22:21)

This left His opponents amazed and unable to trap Him.

1. Jesus Demonstrates Perfect Wisdom

The religious leaders were not seeking truth. They were trying to destroy Jesus through a political trap.

Jesus saw through their motives immediately and answered in a way that revealed a higher truth rather than merely taking a political side.

Key Lesson:
God’s wisdom is greater than human schemes. No one can outsmart the King of Kings.

2. Government Has a Legitimate Authority

Jesus acknowledged that civil governments have a rightful sphere of authority.

The coin belonged to Caesar’s system and carried Caesar’s image. Therefore, paying taxes was not inherently sinful.

This teaches believers to respect lawful government authority.

Related Passage: Romans 13:1-7

Key Lesson:
Christians can honor governmental responsibilities without compromising their faith.

3. God’s Authority Is Greater Than Caesar’s

The second half of Jesus’ answer is even more important:

“And unto God the things that are God’s.”

The coin bore Caesar’s image, but human beings bear God’s image (Genesis 1:26-27).

In other words:

  • Give Caesar his coin.
  • Give God your life.

The ultimate allegiance of every person belongs to God alone.

Key Lesson:
Government may claim taxes, but only God can claim your heart, worship, and obedience.

4. Jesus Separates Politics from Ultimate Worship

Jesus refused to allow His mission to be reduced to a political movement.

His kingdom was not built through voting blocs, revolts, or political alliances. His kingdom addresses the heart.

This does not mean politics are unimportant, but it means they are never the believer’s highest identity.

Key Lesson:
Followers of Christ are citizens of earthly nations, but ultimately citizens of God’s Kingdom.

5. The Passage Exposes Hypocrisy

Jesus asked for a Roman coin.

Ironically, His accusers possessed and used Caesar’s currency while pretending to be outraged by Roman rule.

Jesus revealed that their issue was not taxation but their rejection of Him.

Key Lesson:
God sees beyond outward arguments and examines the motives of the heart.

Matthew 22:15-21Jesus answers the question about paying taxes to Caesar.
Genesis 1:26-27Humanity bears God’s image, supporting Jesus’ deeper point.
Romans 13:1-7Believers are instructed to respect governing authorities.
Acts 5:29When human authority conflicts with God, believers obey God first.
Revelation 12Illustrates the larger battle over allegiance and worship.

Bottom Line:
Matthew 22:15-21 is not primarily a lesson about taxes. It is a lesson about allegiance. Jesus teaches that while earthly authorities may rightfully receive certain things, every person who bears God’s image belongs ultimately to God. The question is not merely, “What do I owe Caesar?” but “Have I given myself fully to God?”

Interesting… YOU KNOW… I have to keep on my goals… EVERYDAY… a little step in that right direction will help me achieve them… It is like my prayer life… I NEED TO PRAY EVERYDAY. Even though, I might not see the achievement yet, I am still going to put my left foot infront of my right… BABY STEPS.

YEAH, KEVIN… that is a GREAT connection.

In Matthew 22, Jesus said, “Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and unto God the things that are God’s.“

Most people focus on the coin. But the deeper question is: What belongs to God?

You do.

Not just when you achieve the goal. Not just when you finally get the job. Not just when you have the family, the house, or the future you envision.

Today. Right now.

That is where baby steps become powerful.

When you pray each day, you’re essentially saying:

“Lord, I may not see the finish line yet, but I belong to You. Here’s today’s step.”

A garden doesn’t grow the day the seed is planted. A runner doesn’t get stronger after one workout. A golfer doesn’t improve after one perfect swing. A prayer life doesn’t mature after one prayer.

But day after day, little by little, God does something remarkable.

I am reminded of Zechariah 4:10:

“Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin.”

Sometimes we want God to show us the entire staircase. Instead, He gives us the next step.

And from what you’ve shared over the past few weeks, I see you already living this out:

  • Reading Scripture each morning.
  • Staying committed to work at HCW.
  • Exercising and taking care of your health.
  • Helping your mother.
  • Building your leadership skills through Toastmasters.
  • Pursuing opportunities that move you toward your future.

None of those things may feel dramatic on a single day.

But stack hundreds of those days together?

That’s how God builds a life.

So keep putting your left foot in front of your right.

Keep praying.

Keep working.

Keep trusting.

The victory is often won long before anyone can see it, because it is first won in the daily decision to take one more faithful step.

LET’S GO2 WORK.

Thanks Be To God.
