HIGH FIVE! (yes)

Good morning, Kevin. Romans 8:1-10 is one of the most powerful passages in all of Scripture because it declares freedom from condemnation, victory over the sinful nature, and the new life believers have through the Holy Spirit.
Romans 8:1-10 – Significance
1. There Is No Condemnation for Those in Christ (vv. 1-2)
Paul begins with a breathtaking truth:
“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
For those who belong to Christ, God’s verdict has already been rendered.
- Not “less condemnation”
- Not “delayed condemnation”
- No condemnation
Because Jesus paid the penalty for sin at the cross, believers are no longer under God’s judgment.
Why this matters
Kevin, many Christians struggle more with guilt than with sin itself. Paul is reminding believers that their standing before God is based on Christ’s work, not their performance.
2. Jesus Accomplished What the Law Could Not (vv. 3-4)
The Law revealed sin but could not remove it.
God solved the problem by sending His Son:
- Jesus took on human flesh.
- Jesus lived a sinless life.
- Jesus became the sacrifice for sin.
Through Christ, the righteous requirements of the Law are fulfilled.
Why this matters
Salvation is not achieved through trying harder.
It is received through trusting Christ.
3. Two Different Mindsets Lead to Two Different Destinations (vv. 5-8)
Paul contrasts:
| Flesh | Spirit |
|---|---|
| Self-centered | God-centered |
| Death | Life |
| Hostile to God | Pleasing to God |
| Controlled by sinful desires | Controlled by the Holy Spirit |
The word “flesh” here refers to fallen human nature that wants to live independently of God.
Why this matters
What controls your mind eventually controls your life.
Paul’s question is essentially:
Who is driving the car?
- The flesh?
- Or the Spirit?
4. The Holy Spirit Lives Inside Believers (v. 9)
Paul says believers are no longer “in the flesh” but “in the Spirit.”
This does not mean Christians never sin.
It means their identity has changed.
The Holy Spirit now dwells within them.
Why this matters
You are not fighting life’s battles alone.
God Himself has taken up residence within His people.
5. Life Triumphs Over Death (v. 10)
Even though our bodies are still subject to physical death because of sin:
- Our spirits are alive because of Christ’s righteousness.
- Eternal life has already begun.
Paul is looking beyond present struggles toward future resurrection.
Why this matters
The Christian life is lived with hope.
Death is not the final chapter.
Resurrection is.
Revelation 12 Connection
| Romans 8:1-10 Theme | Revelation 12 Connection |
|---|---|
| No condemnation in Christ | Satan is the accuser, but his accusations fail because believers are covered by Christ’s blood (Rev. 12:10-11) |
| Freedom from sin’s law | Believers overcome through the Lamb’s victory |
| Life in the Spirit | God’s people are empowered to endure spiritual warfare |
| New identity in Christ | The woman and her offspring belong to God, not the dragon |
| Victory over death | The kingdom of Christ ultimately triumphs over evil |
What This Means for Kevin Today
I think this passage speaks directly into something you’ve shared many times.
You often carry a lot:
- Helping your mom.
- Juggling changing work schedules.
- Pursuing new opportunities.
- Leading in Toastmasters.
- Trying to honor God faithfully every day.
Romans 8 begins with God’s reminder that your value is not measured by how much you accomplish today.
It is measured by whose you are.
Before you mow a yard. Before you go to the gym. Before you lead a meeting. Before you apply for a job.
There is no condemnation for Kevin in Christ Jesus.
Not because you did everything right yesterday.
Not because you will do everything right today.
But because Jesus already did everything right for you.

Prayer
Father, thank You that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. When guilt, fear, and self-doubt try to overwhelm me, remind me that Jesus has already paid my debt. Help me set my mind on the things of the Spirit today. Let Your Spirit guide my thoughts, words, and actions. Fill me with the peace that comes from knowing I belong to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Keep building, Kevin. Keep building. Romans 8 begins with no condemnation and ends with no separation. God starts this chapter by securing your position, then spends the rest of it showing you that nothing can take you away from Him.

WOW… I am amazed at the progression of your knowledge of me… I love Antique Automobiles. They are having the Antique Auto Show in Hershey this week… YOU KNOW, I haven’t seen this show in over 30+ years… The actual car show will be held on Friday. I told Steve that I would work at the GYM friday morning. LOOKS LIKE I AM GOING TO MISS THIS YEAR AS WELL.

Kevin…
I think that’s what makes this sting a little.
It’s not just “an event.”
It’s something you’ve loved since you were a kid.
You told me you love antique automobiles, and now one of the biggest antique car shows in the country is happening practically in your backyard. Yet because you’re honoring a commitment you already made to Steve and the gym, it looks like you’ll miss it again after more than 30 years.
That’s a real disappointment.
But can I offer a different perspective?
Thirty years ago, you were a different man.
Today, the reason you’re missing it isn’t because you don’t care. It’s because you’ve become the kind of person people can depend on.
You gave your word.
And you’re keeping it.
That says something about your character.
Ironically, Romans 8:5-6 comes to mind:
“To set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.”
Sometimes the Spirit-led choice isn’t the most exciting choice.
Sometimes it’s simply honoring the commitment you already made.
Now… does that mean you can never enjoy antique cars?
Absolutely not.
The Hershey show will come back.
And who knows? Maybe next year your schedule will be completely different. Maybe you’ll be working that full-time position you’ve been pursuing, with a predictable schedule and benefits. Maybe you’ll spend an entire day wandering through rows of Packards, Duesenbergs, Model A Fords, Cadillacs, and all the beautiful machines that tell America’s story.
The cars aren’t going anywhere.
But today, you’re building something even more valuable:
A reputation.
A reputation that says:
“Kevin shows up.”
“Kevin keeps his word.”
“Kevin can be trusted.”
That’s worth a lot.
And for what it’s worth… I can picture you walking through that show. Not rushing. Not worried about work. Just taking your time, talking to owners, admiring the craftsmanship, and soaking in the history.
Maybe this isn’t the year.
But I don’t think the story is over.
Keep building, Kevin.
The antique automobiles have survived 80, 90, sometimes 100 years.
I think they can wait one more year for you. 🚗🇺🇸🙂

AMEN.
