TODAY’S LESSON: we got MOMENTUM…

HIGH FIVE! (no need to worry)

Kevin, this passage is one of the most powerful transitions in the entire New Testament. In 1 Corinthians 12:27-13:7, Paul moves from discussing the gifts of the church to revealing the heart that must guide those gifts. His message is clear:

God is not primarily impressed by what we can do for Him. He is concerned with who we are becoming through Him.

7 Core Takeaways

1. Every Believer Has a Place in the Body (12:27)

“You are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.”

Paul reminds the Corinthians that they are not individual spiritual superstars. They are members of Christ’s body.

Significance for you, Kevin: Whether you are leading Toastmasters, serving in Rotary, helping your mother, greeting guests, or reading Scripture at church, your value comes from being connected to Christ, not from the title attached to the service.

2. God Intentionally Gives Different Gifts (12:28-30)

Paul lists apostles, prophets, teachers, miracles, healing, helping, administration, and tongues.

The point is not that everyone should have the same gift.

The point is that God created diversity within unity.

Just as a football team needs quarterbacks, receivers, linemen, and coaches, the church needs different types of servants.

A kingdom built entirely of leaders would fail. A kingdom built entirely of helpers would fail. God’s design requires both.

3. The “Most Excellent Way” Is Greater Than Spiritual Gifts (12:31)

Paul essentially says:

“You want the greater gifts? Let me show you something even greater.”

Then Chapter 13 begins.

The surprise is that the greatest thing is not a gift.

It is love.

The Corinthians were obsessed with power.

Paul redirects them toward character.

4. Love Is More Important Than Ability (13:1-3)

Paul gives three shocking examples:

Without Love…

  • Brilliant speech becomes noise.
  • Great knowledge becomes emptiness.
  • Extraordinary faith becomes nothing.
  • Extreme sacrifice gains no reward.

Notice the repeated phrase:

“I am nothing.”

“I gain nothing.”

Paul is teaching that achievements alone do not impress Heaven.

A person may possess:

  • talent
  • intelligence
  • leadership
  • influence
  • knowledge

Yet still miss God’s primary purpose if love is absent.

5. Love Is Proven Through Actions (13:4-7)

Paul does not define love by feelings.

He defines love by behavior.

Love:

  • is patient
  • is kind
  • does not envy
  • does not boast
  • is not proud
  • is not self-seeking
  • is not easily angered
  • keeps no record of wrongs
  • protects
  • trusts
  • hopes
  • perseveres

Love is visible.

You cannot measure love by emotion alone.

You measure it by how someone treats people when things are difficult.

6. Love Requires Strength, Not Weakness

Many people read Chapter 13 and imagine softness.

But biblical love requires enormous strength.

Consider:

  • Anyone can react in anger.
  • Love chooses patience.
  • Anyone can seek revenge.
  • Love forgives.
  • Anyone can keep score.
  • Love releases the debt.

Love is not passive.

Love is spiritual maturity under pressure.

7. Love Reflects the Character of Christ

The best way to read verses 4-7 is to replace the word “love” with “Jesus.”

Jesus is patient.

Jesus is kind.

Jesus does not boast.

Jesus perseveres.

Paul is ultimately describing Christ Himself.

The closer we grow to Jesus, the more these characteristics emerge in our lives.

What This Means for Kevin

Kevin, you spend a lot of time trying to be useful.

You help your mother.

You serve your church.

You lead in Toastmasters.

You volunteer through Rotary.

You show up for work when others call off.

Those things matter.

But this passage reminds you that God’s highest question is not:

“How much did Kevin accomplish today?”

It is:

“Did Kevin love people while doing it?”

Because one day every title, every job, every award, every fantasy football championship, every leadership role, and every accomplishment will pass away.

But the love you showed to people in Christ’s name will remain.

INTERESTING… Remember, we got to call your sister today (KERRY)… I am seeing a basement that is slowly being cleaned out… we are making good progress… LET’S KEEP THAT MOMENTUM GOING… I am pleased that I have Sunday, Monday. Tuesday, Wednesday free from work… I can work on myself.

Kevin…

THAT is momentum.

A few weeks ago, the basement probably looked overwhelming. Every box, every magazine, every item represented another decision waiting to be made.

But now?

You’re seeing progress.

Not because everything is finished. Not because the work suddenly became easy.

Because you kept showing up.

That reminds me of the love Paul describes in 1 Corinthians 13:

“It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”

Perseverance doesn’t usually look dramatic. Sometimes it looks like:

  • One more box sorted.
  • One more item donated.
  • One more listing posted.
  • One more phone call made.
  • One more day choosing discipline over discouragement.

And today, you have something else that is valuable:

Four days.

Sunday. Monday. Tuesday. Wednesday.

Not four days to waste. Not four days to worry.

Four days to invest in Kevin.

You can:

✅ Continue the basement project.

✅ Call Kerry and keep family connections strong.

✅ Get into the gym and build your health.

✅ Spend time in Scripture.

✅ Prepare for future opportunities.

✅ Get some quality rest after those HCW shifts.

I also hear something encouraging in what you wrote:

“I can work on myself.”

That’s healthy.

Not selfish.

Healthy.

You spend a lot of your life helping:

  • your mother
  • your church
  • your Rotary club
  • your Toastmasters club
  • your workplace

These next few days are an opportunity to let God strengthen you as well.

So let’s keep that momentum going.

Basement: Progress. Family: Progress. Fitness: Progress. Faith: Progress. Kevin: Progress.

One box. One workout. One prayer. One day at a time.

And before you know it, you’ll look around and say:

“WOW… I’ve come farther than I realized.”

Now let’s go get after Saturday… and then enjoy those four glorious days off. 💪🏃📖🙏🙂

THANKS BE TO GOD.

(Don’t forget to replace that brake light, mail those items from Ebay, check the Insurance card in the car… AND MOW 🙂 🙂 :))

WIN WITH INTEGRITY.
